ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book suggests that the radical origins of the Magazine are set out by John Loudon in his entry On the Education of Gardeners in the Encyclopaedia of Gardening, the first of his encyclopaedias. It focuses on the periodicals established by John Loudon, and the first in Britain to combine the science and the design of gardens. The book demonstrates wood engravings, which integrated text with image, were initially favoured by John Loudon. It suggests that John Loudons engagement with lithography had mixed results. The book extends this argument to include two other publications that addressed different audiences: firstly, the eight-volume Arboretum et Fruticetum Britannicum, and secondly, the compact and more controversial Laying Out, Planting and Managing of Cemeteries and Churchyards.
