ABSTRACT

In October 1921, Skalkottas travelled to Berlin to further his musical education. In contrast, Berlin at this time was the cultural and spiritual centre not only of the Weimar Republic but also of Europe. Skalkottas settled in the Lankwitz neighbourhood of Berlin and registered at the Hochschule fr Musik, in Willy Hesss violin class, for three years until 30 September 1924. Thus Skalkottass pre-Schoenberg life in Berlin has been neatly compartmentalized into successive academic years with the requisite summer break, notwithstanding the nature of the composers' private studies. Mitropoulos arrived in Berlin after a years study in Brussels, supported by both the Averof and Emanuel Benakis scholarships. Perhaps as a consequence of the negative reception of his music, compounded with his perennial financial and health problems and Schoenbergs absence from Berlin for a year, Skalkottass compositional output had waned.
