ABSTRACT

For Coates, the period of 1936 was a time of great consolidation, building upon the extraordinary level of popularity afforded him by the tremendous success of the Knightsbridge March. Throughout the winter months of 1935, Coates was working on a new Suite, London Again, which was completed on 18 February 1936, after an almost entirely compositionally barren 1935. Coates second orchestral work of 1936 was composed very reluctantly, following a trip to Ireland. On 7 March 1936, Coates was invited to conduct part of a broadcast by the BBC Northern Ireland Orchestra at the Ulster Hall in Belfast. Coates had long been an admirer of the saxophone and had written a small part for the alto saxophone in the late-1920s vignette Under the Stars, while the tenor featured in the middle movement of The Three Men Suite.
