ABSTRACT

The momentous capture of the Francis by Pedro Tello near Guadalupe is told by the Spanish admiral himself (document 26) and by one of the English crew (document 27). Taken together, these accounts show the extent of the Spaniards' luck, but the prisoners either could not or would not say what Drake's objectives were after Puerto Rico - a point confirmed by the official relacion (document 29 ). Thus the warning relayed from Santo Domingo cannot have been as precise as was later suggested. 1 Even so, the news of Drake's presence and the certain knowledge of his immediate objective were of immense value to the Spanish.
