ABSTRACT

The Boardwalk had particular cachet as it had recently counted Arctic Monkeys’ frontman Alex Turner as one of its barmen and was a regular musicians’ haunt at the time. November 2007 saw the acquisition of the leasehold by Academy Music Group of the former Roxy nightclub, a vast sticky-floored institution that had opened in the 1970s as the Top Rank but closed as a nightclub in the late 1990s. The municipal council venue and traditional home of symphonic music in the city through its concert series was Sheffield City Hall. The City Hall also hosted a mixture of jazz and rock/pop acts, including Tony Christie, Rufus Wainwright and Beverley Knight. More regular jazz gigs took place at Millennium Hall at the Polish Catholic Centre, many promoted by Sheffield Jazz while jazz also happened at the Abbeydale Picture House and the Showroom Cinema’s café bar, plus smaller venues such as Ruskin’s Wine Bar and Cubana.
