ABSTRACT

Ecology is the scientific study of the relationship between living organisms and their environment; it is a branch of the natural sciences. The buildings in which music happens today may or may not have started out as musical sites; even if they did, the musical ideology inscribed in their physical and acoustic design may or may not be compatible with the listening expectations of later musical communities. The cooperative links influence the kind of art and music that can be or will be produced within the club. A live music event is an effect of the interdependence of music worlds, regulatory worlds and commercial worlds. Promoters and venue owners know that state authorities routinely make decisions without any reference to live music at all, which nevertheless have profound consequences for what kind of music can be made where, when and for whom. In recent years, local newspapers have begun to celebrate long-gone music venues as part of their nostalgia marketing.
