ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the Live Nation model, the Ticketmaster model and the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) model. Robert Sillerman was not the first person to realise that the United States (US) live rock business had not changed much since it had been established in the late 1960s and that it needed to evolve. The established way of doing things involved a national network of fiefdoms run by regional promoters whose collective collaboration was necessary for artists to mount national tours. In 1998, David Bowie and his business managers launched Ultrastar:a management/technology partnership that specializes in the area of Internet services, bringing major entertainment, sports and fashion clients to the world in a community-based forum delivered over the Web. The history of live music as a business can be written as a history of ticketing. The commerce of a concert is that people who want to enjoy it have to pay money to attend.
