ABSTRACT

The British Dance Council, for example is the governing body for all matters pertaining to all forms of ballroom, Latin American, and disco freestyle dancing throughout England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Channel Islands. The National Brass Band Championship of Great Britain has been organised in its present sectional form since 1945; the British Association of Barbershop Singers has staged an annual convention featuring its National Quartet and Chorus contests since 1974; and the World Piping Championship has been held annually in much the same format since 1930, although since 2003 it has been preceded by Glasgow’s Piping Live Festival. In the classical music world, the remarkable rise of festivals in the last 40 years has been driven primarily by musical concerns, most obviously by organisers’ commitment to certain kinds of music, but also often by the interests of particular musicians.
