ABSTRACT

In 1962, Glasgow was often missing from UK tours; by 1976, the Apollo Centre had become a popular addition to the touring circuit: Cliff Richard, Steeleye Span, Tammy Wynette and The Drifters all appeared at the venue in a very busy October-November. While live popular music in Glasgow appeared to be thriving, it was in the face of sometimes draconian enforcement of licensing laws and the notoriously conservative Glasgow city council authorities. Classical music in Glasgow was still flourishing, albeit without a large municipal concert hall. Glasgow’s burgeoning love of country music can be seen in the opening of the Grand Old Opry in 1974, founded by the late Alex Fleming. Jazz was still popular and old favourites such as George Penman continued to perform in the city. Jazz promotion company Platform Jazz was started in the 1970s and had a touring network across Scotland.
