ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that the modalities of Risshō Kōseikai's global repositioning at the inter-religious, discrete-elements, and inter-systemic level are intimately related to each other. The Great Sacred Hall of Risshō Kōseikai' is probably one of the most lavish facilities among the many belonging to new religious movements scattered throughout the Japanese urban landscape. The trajectory of Risshō Kōseikai' shows that the increasing availability of other religions in the global religious market can undermine to a certain extent the claims of absolute authority based on the Buddhist teaching of the Lotus Sūtra. The inherent weakness also emerges from recent developments related to the nuclear power-plants issue after the return to power of the Liberal Democratic Party in December 2012. The issue of Risshō Kōseikai's engagement in inter-religious dialogue shows that the global cultural network and functional differentiation contribute equally to relativization occurring at the inter-religious level.
