ABSTRACT

This chapter provides both a theoretical and methodological framework for this study. We first present the principles of Dialectic Discourse Analysis, a Critical Discourse Analysis-based theoretical approach which is utilized to analyze occupation normalization and estrangement strategies in this volume. We define Dialectic Discourse Analysis as a theoretical approach which examines discourse as a process of perpetual positing and synthesis of oppositions through the discursive construction, differentiation, and mediation of Self and Other. Next, the chapter provides a background to the vast theoretical approaches which inform Dialectic Discourse Analysis. We then provide an illustration from the historic United Nations Security Council Resolution 242, which demonstrates the importance of language in conflict situations. Next, we illustrate how the theoretical underpinnings of occupation normalization and estrangement have shaped various discursive approaches in Israel. Finally, we describe the methodology used in this volume and corpus collection, as well as the analysis techniques utilized.
