ABSTRACT

Newspapers will survive for some time in some form, although there probably will be fewer of them, but increasingly they will be read online rather than in print, and editors will increasingly find themselves editing mainly for web audiences. News from the wire services plays different roles in the various media. Newspapers seldom have the opportunity to beat the electronic media to a wire story or even a local one, except at its online site where it can publish almost instantly, often before scheduled broadcast news shows. The dominant wire service in the US is The Associated Press; a cooperative owned by member newspapers and broadcast stations. The newspaper is a graphic art form, using words, pictures, colour, lines and masses subject to the same principles of artistic design as other art forms. The principles most applicable to newspapers are known as balance, contrast and unity.
