ABSTRACT

The phrase "the attention economy" is often used in relation to that problem. It is not that traditional media are not covering mental health issues, but that that coverage is focused on mental illness and disability – the experience an older audience may have of autism among their children and grandchildren, dementia among their parents and friends. Channel 4 News, in the UK, made big changes in the way they delivered their content online and were massively successful in growing their online audience. They ditched the traditional picture and words formats most news publishers took with them online and focused on video only – and "square" format video at that so it could be watched anyways up on a smartphone. Al Jazeera senior reporter Juliana Ruhfus used a mobile game to tell the story of how Syrian activists were tortured to give up their passwords and security teams hacked networks to use internet against the anti-Assad movement.
