ABSTRACT

This chapter examines principles and theory of crowd flow, crowd processing and monitoring methods and crowd communication practices. Crowd management and control involves ensuring that crowds do not block entrances, exits or pedestrian flows, and organising how the crowd is going to be distributed inside the venue. The safety of the public in event environments is largely determined by the interaction of the venue or site’s architectural design and efficient crowd management. Individuals seek to minimise their estimated travel time towards a particular goal, while simultaneously attempting to avoid extreme crowd densities. The objective of Front of House crowd control strategies is to prevent the build-up of large accumulations of patrons in short periods of time. The processing time for the various methods for selling and checking of tickets should be considered in terms of rapid movement of people. The security control of an event should be given to key operational personnel with plentiful experience of crowd events.
