ABSTRACT

This chapter examines event work practice hazards in event production and operations phases, in particular site construction, communication systems and staff stress and vulnerability. It also examines ergonomics and protective clothing and hazardous machinery and equipment. The site production phase of an event is the construction of the festival site or the movement of equipment into a venue and organising appropriate storage and handling of physical elements where required. An event construction site combines a number of hazardous situations into a constricted time and space. The event site manager will provide clear instructions to appropriate personnel regarding the monitoring of vehicle access and movement, the movement of physical elements to ensure safety and avoid harm. Stress is often a symptom of poor employment relations and can seriously affect productivity and service quality. Physiology measuring estimates the energy demands on the heart and lungs from muscular effort during movements.
