ABSTRACT

Transition can be transforming, as the person who existed in one setting, stage or place moves on and becomes the person who exists in, and relates to, the next one. It can trigger progress if the environment the person moves into is exactly what they need at that time in their life and they feel ready to embrace the new challenge and experiences presented to them. This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. There was a great deal of talk about how school and college would support transition and some exemplary practice on the part of individuals in both settings. But in reality, little attention was paid to the emotional impact of change or the need to view transition as a process, and a potentially lengthy one at that. The same principles relating to transition apply at whatever age.
