ABSTRACT

This chapter recognises the emotional and behavioural needs of siblings of a child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition. It considers the use of Class Profiles of Need to support information sharing so that all staff has an understanding of factors impacting a child's emotional and behavioural well-being. The chapter reviews ways that social and emotional aspects of learning (SEAL) can be used to support the emotional and behavioural needs of children. Teachers identified that they wanted to better understand how life-limiting or life-threatening conditions may affect children emotionally and behaviourally and wanted strategies for dealing with a range of possible changes that could be experienced. Whilst staff in the school may be focused on the emotional and behavioural needs of the child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition, it is essential to recognise the emotional and behavioural needs of other children within the class and school setting.
