ABSTRACT
This chapter addresses both conceptual and practical approaches to documentary postproduction—the processes by which all the produced and collected media content is shaped to best convey the story or driving question of the project. It assists the readers in developing a distinct editorial style for their project. The chapter considers the best practices for sound editing and design, the place of music in documentary media and associated issues around rights, fair use, and the process of collaborating with a composer on original score. It highlights the nature of working relationships between a documentary's director, editor, and composer, providing tips on how to cultivate and facilitate these key partnerships. The chapter further deals with a descriptive postproduction timeline for a typical single-channel documentary project, helping to acquaint readers with the various phases and processes that transform raw media into a finished work.
