ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses how the natural environment has been incorporated into development definitions, theories and practices. The environment has often been seen as a source of resources for economic growth, but environmental protection has increasingly been part of definitions of development, particularly with the rise of sustainable development as a global ambition. The chapter investigates the diverse meanings of sustainable development and how these fit into different development approaches.
