ABSTRACT

In Chapter 3, we outlined how to begin building an ensemble atmosphere in your classroom, which encourages students to say “yes” to creative risks, to collaborate on drama-based activities, and to commit to clear communication skills, especially projection and articulation. Now it’s time to jump into the deep end by exploring the text of the play though a student-friendly rehearsal approach. In this chapter, we will explore how to apply close reading strategies to uncover the playwright’s themes and clues to character development, how dramaturgical research can inform acting and directing choices, and how to best rehearse a scene. We will also address the revision process as it applies to the theater process, and introduce some helpful domain-specific terms used in theater that can help your students work together and act together.
