ABSTRACT

There are no differences of opinion, however, about the objectivity of guilt when we come to religion and theology. There are great differences as to the meaning of sin and its source. Unlike either Law or Ethics theology takes congnizance of both subjective guilt-feelings and objective guilt. Whereas the task of the psychotherapist is to reduce the intolerance of the Super-ego, that is the intensity of guilt-feelings, the more evangelical theologians and preachers aim to produce the conviction of sin by stimulating guilt-feelings. Not a little of adolescent guilt-feelings are due to a misunderstanding of sex impulses and feelings; and indeed many good Christian people never get rid of guilt-feelings in regard to sex. A prolific source of these subjective guilt-feelings is the exploitation of God by parents who want a short cut to the discipline of their children.
