ABSTRACT

Blended staffs of young and veteran journalists are essential in maintaining the paper's historical standards of good journalism while moving into the digital age. For all journalism generations, there needs to be an understanding that online and social media are merely new delivery systems for good content. Control of the website moved from IT into the newsroom, where journalists assumed full responsibility of online content. The newsroom Web traffic board and daily online reports were constant reminders that the Web needed to be fed. The newspaper brain drains shattered expectations and traditions long established by generations of news workers. Mike had experienced the newspaper's heyday when the staffs were twice as large and investigative journalism won them a cadre of awards and accolades from peers and readers. For hundreds of years, United States' newspapers have operated under the privileged protection of the First Amendment while accepting a social responsibility to inform, safeguard and question a community.
