ABSTRACT

In addition to the health and safety requirements, before carrying out any inspection and testing activity it is essential that the inspector has all the necessary information required. The first and most important things to understand are the terms statutory and non-statutory. Statutory is the term used to describe something that is a legal requirement and therefore must be complied with by law. Something that is non-statutory, however, usually exists simply to provide guidance and is not a legal requirement. Periodic inspection and testing is carried out on existing installations to establish whether the installation is a satisfactory condition for continued service. The general requirements for periodic inspection and testing are laid out in section 621 of the IET Wiring Regulations. Whether performing initial verification or periodic inspection and testing, the more information the inspector has prior to carrying out the inspection and testing activity, the better prepared they will be.
