ABSTRACT

Standard Ports are those ports which are classed as major ports, or hubs of marine activity providing either deep water, suitable for commercial cargo ships and fishing activity, or considered important for their proximity to industry and transportation links. As a result, the Admiralty have constructed the Tide Tables in such a way that these ports have their own calendar of predictions for times and Heights of Tide, for each day and month of the year. Alongside these predictions is a set of Tidal Curves depicting the characteristic of the tide used for the calculation of intermediary times and heights of tide. The solid line represents the tidal characteristic for the port during a Spring Tide and the other represents the characteristic followed during a Neap Tide. The characteristic shape of each curve changes slightly with each port and is governed by the topography of the seabed.
