ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces you to common tools and techniques used in engineering. As an engineer you will need to develop profi ciency with a number of skills, including cutting, forming, joining and assembling parts and components. In order to be able to do this, you will need to understand the various processes involved, such as how to select and use a drill, how to make a soldered joint and how to select and fi t threaded components such as nuts, bolts and screws. All of this is something that will take you into a practical engineering workshop environment. What you learn and practise there will undoubtedly form the foundation of your ‘skill set’ as an engineer.
