ABSTRACT

Global news channel Al Jazeera English (AJE) and state-affiliated Malaysian national news channel Bernama TV uphold opposing philosophies of journalism. Also, in contrast to resource-rich AJE, at one point Bernama TV operated without agency news subscriptions or broadband internet. Ultimately, opposing macro-level ideological news values and contrasting organizational contexts manifest into two highly divergent interpretations of how social media and networked sources might be incorporated into established journalistic practices. Glocal-comparative analyses of network newswork at Malaysia’s resource-rich national news agency and the single-reporter Kuala Lumpur bureaus of large international news organizations bring to fore other global, local, and glocal nuances in network newswork.
