ABSTRACT

Leadership is the number one factor in organisational success; employees need leadership, want good leadership, because they want to be led so that they are productive. There are four main theories of leadership – trait, behavioural, contingency, and attributional – and all have useful things to teach someone, although none of them may be entirely accurate. The heart of leadership is about personal growth and development, without which the leader is trying to solve today’s problems with yesterday’s knowledge, skills, and self. The chapter focuses on leadership and engagement, and in one true sense only scratched the surface. But if there is one key thing that it has sought to establish, it is this: that motivation is at the heart and soul of both leadership and engagement. Despite different models of what engagement is, all employee engagement involves of necessity addressing the motivations of employees and of leaders too.
