ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part covers the traditional instructional systems design (ISD) knowledge base in its presentation of techniques of job, task and function analysis. It also covers approaches to competency text creation that do not draw on the ISD knowledge base, such as the popular DACUM approach, which rejects or sidelines the need for technical approaches to analysis associated with ISD. The part describes training strategies, resources and e-learning relevant to Competency-based education (CBE). It explores the conceptual basis of competency-based assessment, as well as principles for generation of quality evidence and for making consistent assessment judgments. The part emphasizes strategies and resources that tap into the flexibility inherent in CBE for innovative delivery. Aviation industry stakeholders need to be assured that holders of industry roles are competent, and it is the assessment process that underpins this assurance.
