ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the more innovative training potential of CBE, starting with a consideration of the principles of training strategy design derived from the instructional design literature. It discusses some practical guidelines for conducting training, before exploring e-learning as an increasingly important approach to training that is widely used in Competency-based education (CBE). Competencies are often conceptualized in sets, with multiple complementary competencies designed to address a more complex task or work role. The chapter considers the alignment of training strategies for competency-based learning, the distinction between supplantive and generative approaches to creating training, and some templates for training design. Learning outcomes are better in courses that include both classroom and e-learning components. Considering the training design and delivery strategies discussed thus far, it is interesting to consider that a competency framework for aviation trainers has been developed. The chapter concludes with a brief overview of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) instructor competency framework.
