ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part explores the impact of simulation and discusses how future professionals may approach learning, big data, wearable technology, augmented reality and adaptive e-learning. It also explores some of the strengths and weaknesses of competency based education in aviation and indicates ways the industry can move beyond these weaknesses. The part focuses on the future direction of competency-based education (CBE). CBE is instructional design, training and assessment that systematically references written competencies. This definition takes into account competence, competencies and competency based education. "Competency-based education" is instruction that is created to focus learning activities on the development of professional "competence." This is accomplished by linking instructional objectives to "competencies". Therefore, compared with traditional training, competency-based education is more focused on application of learning to realistic scenarios.
