ABSTRACT

Drawing upon new translations and descriptions of the First Studio’s bucolic work in Crimea as well as the famed studio journal, this chapter presents the history of the First Studio of the Moscow Art Theatre as it developed organisationally from Slavophile philosophy. Leopold Sulerzhitsky’s desire to create a theatre-commune is analysed in depth through his teaching at the Adashev School to the creation of studiinost as the ethical bonds of the studio archetype.
