ABSTRACT

A select descriptive chronology of the theatre laboratory. While in no way intending to be a complete list of theatres that have placed laboratory in their name or that might fall under a laboratory theatre category, this chapter aims to address scholarship that has been conditioned by Jerzy Grotowski and the laboratory theatre movement of the second half of the twentieth century. It therefore reminds readers that the use of laboratory within a theatrical context dates to at least 1907 and repositions Russia as central to any claims for “inventing” the term.
