ABSTRACT

Informing and consulting are very different tactics. Information tactics are also an effective means of raising awareness of a consultation in its early stages and can be used to target a wide range of potential consultees. Qualitative tactics compliment quantitative tactics, not only in the results generated but in the approach taken. Due to the emphasis on dialogue, qualitative tactics provide an opportunity for those running consultations to develop constructive relationships with key stakeholders. Tactics such as focus groups are particularly useful in ascertaining thoughts on specific subjects, while a series of online forums or a day-long workshop can consider a range of issues. Engaging communities with collaborative and participatory consultation has resulted in high levels of positive engagement among the local communities. The project liaison group has proven to be an excellent means of developing and maintaining relationships with local residents, gaining important insight and working with local people to suit the new power plant to the community.
