ABSTRACT

There is a logical sequence of steps involved in doing an interview-based study. These steps are parallel to those which have taken under most qualitative approaches. In interview-based studies, convenience sampling methods such as snowball sampling are commonly used. Snowball sampling involves referrals provided by respondents to other potential respondents. This is a relatively painless way to generate a good-sized sample. A wide variety of interview structures are possible in practice. However, in principle you may think of there being three basic types: unstructured, structured, and semi-structured. Conducting a semi-structured interview does require more skill than conducting a structured one, because unexpected turns can occur in the interview. Perhaps the most important way to prepare for the interview is to develop an interview guide to be used during the interview. There are three distinct stages in the analysis of interview: data familiarization, data reduction, and data interpretation and verification.
