ABSTRACT

Sheldon Harnick started his career in musical theatre by writing both the music and lyrics to his songs. Jerry Bock did the same. Harnick used his writing ability to entertain the troops during his three years in the army, and continued writing for entertainers while in college. Compared to most Broadway shows of that day, She Loves Me is an intimate musical, requiring only a small cast of seven principals plus a chorus to portray various customers and restaurant diners. Sholom Aleichem's tales have resonated with readers around the world, and a Soviet artist created a series of prints that depicted Tevye and his family. Unlike She Loves Me, Fiddler on the Roof was showered with recognition. Bock and Harnick switched gears entirely for their next production, The Apple Tree. Bock and Harnick reunited to write an additional song, "Topsy-Turvy", for the 2004 Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof.
