ABSTRACT
Robert Angus Smith was born on 15 February 1817 in Pollockshaws near Glasgow, the seventh son and twelfth child of John and Janet Smith. 1 John was a minor manufacturer in Loudoun, Ayrshire and in 1796 married Janet Thomson, daughter of a flax-mill owner, at Avondale, Lanarkshire.
