ABSTRACT

Learning project management and leadership through service-learning helps to prepare students for the work world and the economy. However, it also helps to prepare them for participating in society. They are not just learning new knowledge and skills for employment and business. Their values and attitudes are being affected. Management courses normally focus on preparing people for business, employment and the economy. They never really pay much attention to the needs of community and society. They have from time to time provided courses on ethics and such issues and discussed some of the scandals of our corporate world. However, they never really provide an opportunity for students to develop their understanding, tolerance, empathy and care for others. Service-learning allows us to prepare students for the work world and the economy while making some contribution to preparing them for citizenship, community and society.
