ABSTRACT

Seven documents follow the letter, the first five of them issued in Ansgar's lifetime. They includes a privilege of Pope Paschal I for Ebo of Reims; privileges in the name of Louis the Pious, Pope Gregory IV and Pope Nicholas I for Ansgar; and a further letter of Nicholas to Horik of Denmark. Then come two post-Ansgarian expansions: one a letter from Pope Formosus to the archbishop Adalgar, the other a pallium donation from Pope Sergius III to the archbishop Hoger. This chapter determines whether the privileges arise from genuine documents. Finally, we will inquire after the purpose of the interpolations and the most likely period of their introduction. They will also allow us to identify how Ansgar (to a lesser extent) and Rimbert and his successors sought to shape the early history of their institution.
