ABSTRACT

Highsmith's texts can be divided into those that are situated within the United States and those that she locates abroad, either in Europe or Tunisia, in the case of The Tremor of Forgery, the novel. It examines what might appear to be a qualitatively different notion of exile; that is, exile as femininity through three key texts that perform very different functions within Highsmith's oeuvre: Edith's Diary, Found in the Street and Carol. The Waiting Room' examines the status of the letter that always arrives at its destination, and the ways in which, for Jenny in The Cry of the Owl, the note from Robert enables her suicide; in a sense she is written' into death. Partial translations of Feminine Sexuality provides existing English language scholarship on Seminar XX has been based, until quite recently, on the snapshot of the Seminar.
