ABSTRACT
A movement formed by a handful of girls who felt empowered, who were angry, hilarious, and extreme through and for each other. Riot grrrl has since been reinvented numerous times, with the Ladyfest tradition bringing a large element of the riot grrrl approach into the twenty-first century. The cutie scene was something of a secret breeding ground for riot grrrl, especially in the UK. Nevertheless, the US riot grrrl scene certainly provided the principal tinder for the later developments in the UK. Blush's not-entirely-subtle put down of the so-called Riot Grrl movement may reflect a general response of the older generation of punks to the riot grrrl generation. For many participants, including a remarkable number of males, riot grrrl brought a new-sense in which a micromatic recoil allowed a moment where perhaps anyone could do it. However, if some felt that this was the case, no such presence appears to have been recognized by certain rock journalists and competing musicians.
