ABSTRACT

The introduction discusses the purpose of this volume and seeks to place it within context in the secondary literature on Athenian law and society in the 20th and early 21st century. It also discusses the general lines in the development of Athenian law from Solon to the fourth4th century as a precursor to subsequent discussions on the nature and purposes of changes and evolution patterns of Athenian law in its social context. It also briefly discusses and evaluates the main sources for our study of Athenian law, including the reliability of the information from the documents inserted in the Attic Orators. I argueThe author argues that most of these documents are authentic, but partial quotations of the laws, and offer reliable information.
