ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 discusses how Athenian law circumscribed, the oikos, the Athenian household with all its members, and their legal duties, responsibilities and rights. It also discusses how the basic unit of the oikos functioned within the polis. The core section of Chapter 3 discusses the duties, roles, responsibilities and legal obligations of the leading male of the household, the kyrios, as well as the other members, with particular reference to some important sources, like the Economics of Xenophon and Aristotle.
