ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the Audit Automation Maturity Model (AAMM), which comprises of five levels of maturity that can assist auditors and audit organisations in enhancing their investment in and adoption of information technology (IT). The AAMM provides a roadmap for auditors and the organisations they work for towards maximising IT use through the continuous assessment of their present IT levels with a view to moving to a higher level. The chapter discusses how audit firms/departments can meet the challenges being posed by the IT revolution and weather the storm of fierce competition caused by this revolution in the audit market. The AAMM is presented as an initial effort which will be improved and refined as more attention is focused on this area considered central to the future development of auditing. It is suggested that future researchers should focus on the practical dimensions of the stages in the proposed AAMM so that its usefulness, robustness and adaptability can be enhanced.
