ABSTRACT

In the opening chapter, we reflected upon what is often seen as a routine association between belligerence and sincerity; or, more accurately perhaps, the truth that is seemingly invested in emotional leakage. In its spontaneity and disregard for the conventions of politeness, impulsive emotionality offers a relief from performances of fawning artificiality. We will recall the cant and obsequiousness of which Bryson (1998) accuses courtly behaviour: codes of conduct designed to please the holders of power and to uphold their procedures. Belligerence, where it occurs, foregrounds frankness at the risk of unsettling those listening and causing displeasure to the interlocutor.
