ABSTRACT

Heiner Mller initiated the first project with Neubauten in 1988 and during his lifetime there were four more, plus other unrealized proposals based on Artaud's and Jean Paul's writings. Originally Mller was to write the text but, apart from providing source material, suggestions and some editing, eventually he left it to Bargeld to create the scenario. The Wende held up any further cooperation as East German Radio was reorganized but, in 1990, Wolfgang Rindfleisch co-directed Mller's Hamletmaschine with Bargeld. Bargeld not only recalls John Cage's story of being in the soundproof chamber but also the Butoh concept of the body being the dance. Lyrics explore the idea that the human structure is perhaps not the best possible one, or at least, is still evolving. In discussing the work with Harry Lachner, Bargeld referred to Was ist ist and explained that the empty sky was to be filled with utopian music.
