ABSTRACT

From the viewpoint of the business, quality can be a bit of an enigma and a surprise. The enigma relates to how it can actually be quite difficult to tie quality down. The project perspective on quality will be different. The classic triangle of time-cost-quality means that if forced to meet a specific target in terms of time or cost, the project may find that it needs to compromise on quality. Most projects include an internal tension between those who focus very carefully on quality, particularly making sure that the processes that are traditionally associated with achieving high levels of quality are followed. Quite simply, quality will appeal to some team members but strike others as a bureaucratic slowdown. Some within the project team may feel that repeated uncertainty, mind-changing and vagueness by the business make it in some way a problem to be fought against rather than a partner with which to construct a solution.
