ABSTRACT

The area of requirements is often one where expectations diverge between the business and the project. The members of the business team who are involved in specifying the requirements are often selected for their deep expert knowledge of the business. They are best placed to appreciate the full ramifications of the choices and trade-offs that are often part of the process of developing requirements. Sometimes the natural progress of the project and the increasing level of knowledge lead to a requirement that is clearer. One particular type of project with a particular flavour of requirements is a consolidation project. This can result from a merger where a new organisation finds that multiple units are sometimes performing the same activity in different ways, and a single approach will be beneficial in terms of both efficiency and effectiveness. Only with good two-way understanding can the requirements be crafted and agreed and the project move forward into design.
