ABSTRACT

The routes to be serviced reflected the continuing importance of the Brazil/Argentina trade. Indeed, Royal Mail's main function was now to maintain that service. Araby was the first Royal Mail vessel to enter active service: she sailed from London for France on 17 September laden with army stores and equipment. The Liverpool-based Pacific Steam Navigation Company, for so many years closely associated with the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company and owned by it from 1910, was purchased from the still-active trustees of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company for 600,000. Royal Mail's management reports of the period did not reflect especial concern with quota arrangement on meat shipments, although the negotiations were closely observed. The Royal Mail realisation company continued its work of distributing assets of the Steam Packet Company through the remainder of the decade. Within the complex financial situation of the fledgling Company, somehow, from 1933, investments were made in government securities.
