ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns the educational progress of Dalit students and their views on caste-related issues. The main thrust of the interview was to learn students' opinions on the Indian caste system, and how far it affects their identity and life in school. The purpose of research was explained to the students and they were happy to co-operate. The chapter addresses three emerging themes: identity issues relating to caste consciousness and inter-caste relationship; emerging individualism; and scholastic achievement as interpreted by teachers. The education system of the UK is held in very high regard primarily due to its quality. It is a world leader in several fields of learning, research, and scholarship. The eminent leader of the Dalit people, Baba Sahib Ambedkar, underlined the importance of education in the uplift of depressed castes. He was a distinguished scholar who held senior doctorates from London University and the University of Columbia.
