ABSTRACT

Angel reconstructs a precise chronology of Grenada's history from 1951 to 1983, charting a peoples extended struggle for self-determination, first, and successfully, against British colonialism, then again with success against the post independence domestic regime, and finally, vainly, against neoliberal globalization. The US government removed filing cabinets filled with microfiches of documents from Grenada, declaring them the property of the Government of the United States. The established churches perpetuate colonial ideology, inhibit political struggle, and naturalize inequality. In Angel neither Cuba nor the Soviet Union is a tangible presence: the revolution is understood as indigenous to Grenada. The New Jewel Movement is represented in Angel as Horizon, its popular leader Maurice Bishop as Chief.
